Ethical and Legal standards are the rules, morals, and laws that govern the behavior of healthcare providers and protect patients, clients, and residents. During their shift, Direct Support Professionals make many decisions and take several actions, so it is important that they understand the ethical and legal standards they must follow.
Failing to follow these standards has severe consequences. Unethical behavior can harm the patient and cause the health care provider to be disciplined. Illegal behavior also harms the patient, but results in criminal sanctions or civil liabilities against the Direct Support Professionals. It is important that the responsibilities are understood, so that Direct Support Professionals can protect themselves as well as their patients.
