To improve patient outcomes, hospitals and health care centers around the country have implemented quality improvement measures to increase care coordination, patient safety, and preventive services. Despite these efforts to improve patient experiences, critical incidents continue to be a significant occurrence in the medical field. Direct Support Professionals play a significant role in recognizing and reporting critical incidents as they may interact the most with individuals under care. This course will provide an overview of critical incident reporting including the circumstances when incident reports should be filled out. This course will also discuss the necessity of filling out critical incident reports and barriers to compliance. Lastly, new methods to critical incident reporting which may improve its effectiveness will be discussed.
