The mainstream health care commonly seen in western cultures is focused on medical, surgical, pharmaceutical, and technological treatment; much of the Direct Support Professional’s training is based on mainstream health care treatment. There are, however, other forms of health care that are seen as alternatives to mainstream health care. Some of these are ancient practices that have been revived in modern times, while others were more recently developed. Direct Support Professionals should be familiar with these alternative systems, to better serve their patients, clients, and residents. This course will teach current and future Direct Support Professionals about several alternatives to conventional health care practices that they may encounter in the course of their duties.
