Since 1987, March has been designated National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month.

The campaign highlights the ways in which people with and without developmental disabilities come together to form strong and diverse communities. It also provides an opportunity to create awareness and promote respect for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and bring to light the obstacles faced by these individuals and their families.

October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month, giving us a wonderful chance to spread awareness.  During the month of October, we celebrate people with Down syndrome and their abilities and accomplishments. As the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) states on their site, “It’s not about celebrating disabilities, it’s about celebrating abilities.”
